What is a UTM link?
A UTM link is an ordinary URL with a few utm_ parameters bolted onto the end. Analytics tools read them, so instead of a pile of anonymous “direct” and “referral” traffic you can see the exact campaign, channel and source behind every click. Set them consistently and your reports actually mean something.
The five UTM parameters
utm_sourceIdentifies where the click came from
e.g. google, facebook, newsletter
utm_mediumIdentifies the marketing channel
e.g. cpc, social, email
utm_campaignNames the specific campaign or promotion
e.g. spring-launch, black-friday
utm_termRecords the paid keyword (search ads)
e.g. flipbook+software
utm_contentDistinguishes links to the same URL
e.g. hero-cta vs footer-cta
Source, medium and campaign are the three to set every time. Term and content are optional extras for paid search and A/B-style links.
UTM naming best practices
- Lowercase everything. Analytics treats
Facebookandfacebookas two sources — pick one and stay consistent. - Use hyphens, never spaces.
spring-launch, notspring launch. - Keep a shared convention. Agree on the values your team uses for medium (
social, cpc, email) so reports don’t fragment. - Only tag external links. Don’t UTM-tag links between pages on your own site — it resets the session source.
FAQ
What is a UTM link?+
A UTM link is a normal URL with extra "utm_" query parameters added to the end. Analytics tools like Google Analytics read those parameters so you can see exactly which campaign, channel, and source sent each visitor — instead of everything showing up as generic "referral" or "direct" traffic.
What do the UTM parameters mean?+
utm_source is where the traffic comes from (facebook, google, newsletter). utm_medium is the channel type (social, cpc, email). utm_campaign names the campaign (spring-launch). utm_term is for paid keywords, and utm_content tells apart two links pointing at the same page. Source, medium, and campaign are the three you should always set.
Are UTM parameters case sensitive?+
Yes. Google Analytics treats Facebook and facebook as two different sources, which splits your reports. Pick one convention — lowercase, hyphen-separated, no spaces — and stick to it every time.
Do I need utm_term and utm_content?+
No — they are optional. Use utm_term only for paid-search keywords, and utm_content when you have two links to the same page (say a header and a footer button) and want to know which one people clicked. Most links only need source, medium, and campaign.
Can I add UTM tracking to a Living Page flipbook link?+
Yes. Inside Living Page, the share panel has a link-tracking toggle that appends your UTM parameters to the share link (and QR code) you copy — with saved templates so you do not retype them. This free builder is the standalone version.
Sharing flipbooks? Track them automatically.
Living Page turns any document into a shareable, page-turning reader — with built-in link tracking that appends your UTM tags to every share link and QR code you copy.
